The Isle of Wight Guru has undertaken some price research in celebration of the tenth annicersary of his website. Let’s begin with a snippet from Isle of Wight Guru in 2013:
A SATURDAY TO SATURDAY LUNCHTIME RETURN IN EARLY AUGUST 2013 ON RED FUNNEL FOR A CAR AND DRIVER CAME UP AT £161 RETURN, COMPARED TO £106 FOR SUNDAY TO SUNDAY. THE SAME TEST ON WIGHTLINK FOUND…(FARES OF)…£178 ON THE SATURDAY TO SATURDAY OR £110 ON THE SUNDAY TO SUNDAY.
So, how does that compare to 2023?
With Wightlink, the £178 fare has risen to £300 in 2023. If we apply the Bank of England’s CPI inflation calculator to 2013’s figure then £178 is worth £228 in today’s money. The £110 fare has risen to £227. With the CPI applied, the 2013 figure would be £141 in today’s money.

Fran Collins, CEO at Red Funnel, said,

“The comparison table features a small sample size of individual ferry crossings and is not an accurate reflection or like-for-like comparison of pricing over the last 10 years, which has fluctuated in line with the economic climate and market requirements.

“We review our ticket prices regularly to ensure a sustainable business that supports the Isle of Wight, its residents, and its economy, and we consider all relevant factors. In recent years, these have included ongoing reduced demand due to Covid-19, supporting essential travel to and from the Island, the rising cost of fuel, supply chain disruptions, and the need to stimulate the Island’s tourism economy, amongst others.

“We work hard to offer reduced rates for Islanders and to support local industry and initiatives, and we are fully committed to delivering a sustainable lifeline service to the Isle of Wight.”
